Portland Wins First Exhibition Game in Shootout

Forward Jordan Szwarz scored a goal in regulation and a shootout goal on Thursday to lead the Portland Pirates to a 2-1 win over the University of New Brunswick in an exhibition game at the Portland (Maine) Ice Arena.

Forward Jordan Martinook also scored a shootout goal for Portland, the Coyotes’ top affiliate in the American Hockey League.

Szwarz scored his regulation goal at 15:46 of the second period. University of New Brunswick’s Cam Braes tied the score at 8:01 of the third period.

During the shootout, Portland goalie Mike Lee stopped four of five shots. In addition to playing the shootout, Lee played the second half of the game, plus the overtime, and faced 12 shots.

Portland goalie Mark Visentin started the game and played the first 32 minutes. He stopped all nine shots he faced.

The Pirates will next play on Sunday when they host Manchester in an AHL preseason game.
