Portland Loses Exhibition Game in Overtime
Forward Brian O’Neill scored a goal at 3:59 of overtime on Sunday to lead the Manchester Monarchs to a 4-3 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League exhibition game at the Portland (Maine) Ice Arena.
Defenseman Mark Louis, and forwards Alexandre Bolduc and Chris Brown each scored a goal for Portland, the Coyotes’ top affiliate in the AHL. Trailing 3-2, Brown scored his goal with just 23.9 seconds left to help force overtime.
“The guys worked hard, for the most part,” said Coyotes Assistant General Manager Brad Treliving, who also serves as G.M. of the Pirates. “We played well for the first two periods, but I thought we sat back too much and gave up too many chances against in the third period.”
Goalie Chad Johnson played the entire game for Portland and stopped 30 of 34 shots.
The Pirates will next play on Monday when they take on Manchester in another preseason game at Salem, N.H.
Mark Visentin is expected to start in goal for Portland on Monday.
