Moss, Korpikoski Advance to Semifinals at IIHF World Championship

GLENDALE – Coyotes forwards David Moss and Lauri Korpikoski still are in the mix to win a medal at the 2013 IIHF World Championship.

Moss scored a goal to help the United States defeat Russia, 8-3, in one of four quarterfinals played on Thursday. The goals was the fourth for Moss in eight games. Only Paul Stastny has scored more goals (six) for the USA than Moss.

Korpikoski played 14:57 and was minus-1 in Finland’s 4-3 win over Slovakia in another quarterfinal played Thursday. He has notched one goal and two assists in six games.

Meanwhile, four members of the Coyotes - and their teams – were eliminated from the prestigious tournament thanks to defeats in the quarterfinals.

Goalie Mike Smith stopped 30 shots in Canada’s 3-2 loss to Sweden on Thursday. Smith stopped two of four shots in the shootout, but Sweden’s Jhonas Enroth stopped three of four.

Three other Coyotes – Zbynek Michalek, Radim Vrbata and Martin Hanzal – all were bumped from the event when Switzerland beat Czech Republic 2-1.

The semifinals are set for Saturday. The United States will play Switzerland and Finland will play Sweden. Both games will be played in Stockholm, Sweden.

The gold medal game and the bronze medal game will be played on Sunday in Stockholm.
