Treliving Enjoys 'Family-Type Atmosphere' Surrounding Coyotes

GLENDALE – Coyotes Vice President of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager Brad Treliving signed a multi-year contract extension with the team on Thursday.

“I enjoy this job immensely and I’m lucky to get to work with the people who are here,” Treliving said. “It’s a real family-type atmosphere here and it’s a very good group of people.”

Treliving has been with the team since July 18, 2007. In his role, Treliving is consulted on all personnel decisions and manages the amateur and pro scouting staffs. He also is responsible for all player personnel assignments with the team’s minor league affiliates, and serves as general manger of the team’s American Hockey League club – the Portland Pirates.

“It can be challenging, doing lots of different things, but I enjoy the work,” Treliving said. “…There’s an old saying: the road to success is always under construction. That’s what we live by here.”

The dynamic between Treliving and General Manager Don Maloney is a highly-efficient one.

“We’ve got a very good relationship,” Treliving said. “He allows me to do a lot of things and gives me a lot of responsibility, which is something I really enjoy and I’m thankful for. Apart from that, we have a personal relationship. He’s grown to become a very dear friend, and that makes it that much more enjoyable. I consider him one of my closest friends.”

Maloney said the feeling is mutual.

“Brad is invaluable to what we’re trying to do here,” Maloney said. “I know I may be the one out in front of the cameras, but Brad touches every area of the operation.”

He added: “Brad is a workaholic and a self starter. He’s not standing around waiting to be told what to do, and that’s what we look for in this business - someone you can like and trust, but also someone who will go the extra mile to make the organization better.”

Treliving said he enjoys many aspects of his job but calling and telling players in the AHL that they have been recalled by the Coyotes tops his list of favorite tasks.

“There’s nothing like it,” Treliving said. “Whether it’s a kid that’s coming to the NHL for the first time or a guy that’s been up and down, there’s nothing I like better than telling someone they’re coming to join us in Phoenix because I know that’s something that all of these guys have worked so hard to hear.”
