GLENDALE – The Coyotes staged an intra-squad scrimmage Wednesday night at Jobing.com Arena to benefit the families of the 19 fallen Granite Mountain Hotshots firefighters.

More than 6,300 fans attended the game and the organization raised $165,198 for the families.

“It was an unbelievable, successful night,” Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said. “...Tonight was about giving back to the community and helping those families, and it was an excellent night.”

A pre-game ceremony featured a touching bagpipe performance, a moment of silence and a video tribute for the 19 firefighters who died battling the Yarnell Fire on June 30.

NOTE: Cick here to view a gallery of photos from tonight's scrimmage.

As for the game itself, Mikkel Boedker (Red Team), Andy Miele (Red Team), and Rob Klinkhammer (White Team) notched goals in the scrimmage, which Red won, 2-1.

Miele’s goal, which he scored on a breakaway on netminder Mike Smith, was the prettiest goal of the game. Chris Brown set it up with a nice pass.

Goalies Mark Visentin and Mike Lee stopped 15 of 16 shots in a just-for-fun post-game shootout – forward Brendan Shinnimin scored the lone goal.

But the evening was all about honoring the fallen firefighters.

"It puts everything in perspective," Tippett said. "The video (tribute) and seeing the people, obviously it was nice to be able to contribute and help out some way. Our players and fans and our organization should have a good feeling about helping somebody that goes out of their way to help us in the community."
