Vermette Notches Second Hat Trick of Season

Center Antoine Vermette became the 18th player in Coyotes franchise history to notch more than one hat trick in one season on Sunday night.

Vermette

Vermette scored Phoenix’s first three goals in the team’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena. He recorded his first hat trick of the season on Dec. 21 at Ottawa. Vermette now has three three-goal games in his NHL career.

Canucks goalie Robert Luongo pushed in the puck on Vermette’s first goal after he partially fanned on a shot, and Canucks defenseman Ryan Kesler knocked the puck off Vermette’s stick, over Luongo and into the net for his second tally.

“You talk about bounces and usually you get good chances and the puck doesn’t go in for you,” Vermette said. “I guess it was one of those nights to find a way.”

On Sunday, Vermette scored an even-strength goal, a power-play goal and a short-handed goal. He is just the second player to do that this season – Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos did the same on Oct. 10 vs. Florida. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Vermette is just the seventh player in Coyotes franchise history to notch a hat trick that included an even-strength goal, a power-play goal and a short-handed goal.

Before Sunday’s game, forward Peter Mueller was the last Coyotes player to notch more than one hat trick in a season. Mueller did so in 2007-08.

Vermette now leads the Coyotes with 18 goals, including three short-handed goals in the past four games. Only Boston’s Brad Marchand has scored more short-handed goals this season.

"The last four or five games he's been really strong," Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said. "He's a guy that touches a lot of parts of the game...It was a big night for him."
