Smith Suffers Lower-Body Injury, Leaves Game

Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith left the game at the New York Rangers on Monday night because of a lower-body injury.

With 7:34 left in the third period and the Coyotes leading, 3-2, Smith injured his right leg and was in obvious pain after Rangers forward Derick Brassard fell on top of him following a scramble in front of the net.

Smith was helped off the ice and did not return.

UPDATE: On Tuesday morning in Pittsburgh, Head Coach Dave Tippett said Smith was "day-to-day" and that goalie Mark Visentin would be recalled from the team's affiliate in the American Hockey League.

Smith has been a stalwart in Phoenix's quest to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Entering the game Monday, Smith had a 27-21-10 record with a 2.65 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 61 games.

Thomas Greiss replaced Smith in net and gave up two goals in a 4-3 overtime loss. Tippett said Greiss would play Tuesday's game at Pittsburgh as had been scheduled before Smith's injury. It will be his first start since Feb. 28 at Colorado. is the official Web site of the Arizona Coyotes.
