Coyotes Announce 2013-14 Team Award Winners

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- The Phoenix Coyotes announced today the team awards winners for the 2013-14 NHL season. Coyotes’ center Antoine Vermette won the Fry’s Food Stores Team MVP Award and the Arizona Lottery Jukka Nieminen Memorial Trophy given to the team’s hardest working player. Coyotes Assistant Captain Keith Yandle captured the Desert Schools Leading Scorer Award while goaltender Mike Smith won the Ganem Jewelers Three-Star Award. Forward David Moss was selected as the Gila River Casinos Man of the Year Award for dedication to the community.
In his third year with the Coyotes, Vermette had an outstanding season, leading the team in goals scored (24) and ranking sixth on the team with 45 points. Entering tonight’s game against the Dallas Stars, the 6-foot-1, 198 pound Vermette leads all Coyotes forwards in time on ice per game (19:11) and ranks ninth in the NHL in face-off win percentage to win the Fry’s Food Stores Team MVP Award. The Coyotes broadcast media along with beat writers from the Arizona Republic and FoxSportsArizona.com voted for the award.
Coyotes Assistant Captain Keith Yandle leads all Coyotes players in assists (45) and points with 8-45-53 after 81 games to capture the Desert Schools Leading Scorer Award. He leads NHL defensemen in power-play points (31) and power-play assists (28) and ranks seventh in points. This is the second consecutive season that the 6-foot-1, 190 pound Yandle has led the Coyotes in scoring.
Entering tonight’s game, Vermette leads the team in face-off win percentage and leads all Coyotes forwards in ice time and blocked shots (69) to win the Arizona Lottery Jukka Nieminen Memorial Trophy as the Coyotes’ hardest working player. Vermette was selected as the winner by fans who voted at PhoenixCoyotes.com.
Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith earned 20 star points in 2013-14 to win the Ganem Jewelers Three Star Award. The 6-foot-4, 215 pound Smith posted a record of 27-21-10 this season with a goals against average of 2.64 and a save percentage of .915. Smith also recorded three shutouts.
Coyotes forward David Moss earned the Gila River Casinos Man of the Year Award for his dedication, commitment and passion for bettering the lives of those in the community during his second season as a member of the Coyotes.
Moss was very active in the community this season working with St. Mary’s Food Bank, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Operation Warrior Wishes, Phoenix Day (Adopt a Family), Crisis Nursery, Luke Air Force Base and The Phoenix Zoo. In addition, Moss was involved with Coyotes youth hockey clinics and made a personal appearance and contribution to support a Catholic Central High School hockey player who was paralyzed in a game in Michigan in October.
