SCOTTSDALE - The Coyotes dropped the puck on their annual Prospect Development Camp on Tuesday with the first of three days of on-ice workouts at the Ice Den, the team’s official auxiliary rink.

Thirty-nine players – 26 forwards, 10 defensemen and three goalies - are participating in this year’s camp, which will continue for two more days. Like on Tuesday, the prospects will take the ice again from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

The prospects were split into two groups on Tuesday and the on-ice sessions featured various skating and puck-possession drills. Scrimmages are planned for Wednesday and Thursday.

Among the participants are first-round draft picks Henrik Samuelsson (2012), Max Domi (2013) and Brendan Perlini (2014).

“It was good to get out on the ice today and show what I’ve got,” said Perlini, a forward. “I’m trying to learn a lot here and I think that’s what this camp is all about.”

Other notable prospects include Tyler Gaudet, Brendan Burke, Greg Carey, Zac Larraza and Edgars Kulda.

“This is another opportunity to get to know the staff and to get used to the intensity and to play with a group of great players,” Gaudet said. “It’s another step for me to develop as a player and to be more prepared when rookie camp comes around and when (training) camp comes around.”

In addition to the on-ice workouts, the prospects will take part in off-ice workouts before the daily skates each day and then some team bonding events/team meals after the skates.

After Tuesday’s skate, Perlini, whom the Coyotes selected with the 12th overall pick in last month’s draft, threw out the first pitch at the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Miami Marlins baseball game at Chase Field.

Goaltenders Coach Sean Burke, Associate Coach Jim Playfair and Assistant Coach Newell Brown are leading the prospects on the ice. So is Ray Edwards, the General Manager/Head Coach of the team’s American Hockey League affiliate.

General Manager Don Maloney, new Assistant General Manager Darcy Regier and Head Coach Dave Tippett watched Tuesday’s on-ice session from a perch above the ice.

With 39 players competing, it was a lot for them to digest.

“Trying to put names with faces and numbers is what we did today,” Tippett said. “There are a lot of players here.”

The upcoming scrimmages, Tippett said, would provide a better opportunity for player evaluations.
