Boynton Excited for New Challenge in Radio Booth

GLENDALE – Nick Boynton played more than 600 NHL games over 11 seasons. Now he’s planning to put the insight and wisdom he gathered during that time into Coyotes Radio broadcast.

Boynton

"I played the game. Hopefully I’ll be good at explaining plays and how things come about and maybe what’s going on in a player’s head during a play," Boynton, whom the Coyotes announced as the team’s new Radio Analyst last week, told SiriusXM NHL Network Radio.

Boynton played 138 games for the Coyotes from 2005-08 and he won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010. He will join Play-By-Play Announcer Bob Heethuis in the radio booth for all 82 regular-season games next season. Heethuis has done radio broadcasts solo for the past few seasons.

"I’m thrilled," Boynton said. "When I used to play for the Coyotes I knew Bob well. He was always a true pro. Getting to work with him is going to be a real treat for me."

The feeling is mutual.

"I'm very happy that Nick is joining our radio team," Heethuis said. "I always respected him as a player and enjoyed the interaction that we had during his time as a Coyote. Nick is a really good guy, who obviously knows the game very well. I think he'll provide our fans with a nice mix of personality and analysis which will definitely enhance the overall quality of our broadcasts. I'm very much looking forward to working with him."

He added, "During my time with the Coyotes, I've been very fortunate to have had a couple of really good radio partners in Louis DeBrusk and Tyson Nash. Both are obviously former players and great guys, who have also become outstanding color analysts. I think Nick fits right in that mold and has the potential to have a very successful post playing career in broadcasting."

Boynton is eager to help call Coyotes games because he’s a fan of the defensive style Head Coach Dave Tippett likes to play.

"I love the way he coaches," Boynton said. "You know it’s going to be a defensive battle. Now if the Coyotes can just score a few more goals, that’s going to be the key. I think Sam Gagner will bring that to the team. The west is tough. There’s no doubt about it... You just want to compete every night and if you play one-goal games you’re going to win a lot of them."

Asked what would be the biggest challenge for him, Boynton joked it could be curbing his language.

"It’s going to be different," he said. "I’m not used to talking on radio or calling a game like that. I’m going to have to check my language a little. That might be the toughest part for me."
