GLENDALE – The Coyotes built a 3-1 lead over Los Angeles on Monday night at Jobing.com Arena, but the Kings scored four unanswered goals in the last 21 minutes and won 5-3.

Shane Doan, Martin Hanzal and Scottie Upshall scored goals and backup goalie Jason LaBarbera made 22 saves, but it wasn't enough for Phoenix (9-5-0) to extend its winning streak to four games.

LA's Drew Doughty scored the decisive goal with 4:51 left in the third period as the Kings (9-4-2) beat the Coyotes in Glendale by a 5-3 score for the second time in 10 days.

"We go into the third period up 3-1 ... and they came at us hard," Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said. "We just didn’t do a very good job of defending, didn’t do a very good job of executing to get any opportunities from our end and when you do that it catches up with you and you get beat. That’s exactly what happened.”

The Coyotes came out flat in the first peirod and managed just five shots on goal in the first 20 minutes. Phoenix forward Paul Bissonnette was called for boarding LA's Ryan Smyth at 13:52. The Coyotes killed the penalty, but Kings center Anze Kopitar wristed a shot from the right circle between LaBarbera's legs moments after it expired to give LA a 1-0 lead at 15:59.

LA's Jack Johnson was called for high-sticking Petr Prucha at 16:47. It was a double-minor penalty, and Doan cashed it in when he stationed himself in front of Kings goalie Jonathan Quick and redirected a shot from the top of the slot by Ed Jovanovski into the net with 1.7 seconds left before the first intermission.

Hanzal and Upshall scored their goals in the middle period to give Phoenix a 3-1 lead, but the momentum changed for good when Smyth beat LaBarbera with 58 seconds left in the period to cut Phoenix's lead to 3-2. (See Key Moment below)

LA forward Justin Williams, who missed the past five games with a lower-body injury, tied the score 3-3 by taking control of a loose puck after a faceoff in the Coyotes zone and beating LaBarbera with a backhanded shot as he skated across the crease at 6:44 of the third period.

Smyth added an empty-net goal to complete the scoring with 39 seconds left.

Trailing 3-1 in the final minute of the second period, Ryan Smyth helped LA regain the momentum by scoring a goal that Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett called "a gift." Smyth tried to beat LaBarbera with a shot from in close on the right side, but LaBarbera blocked it. LaBarbera did not freeze the puck, however, and it trickled across the crease to his right. Smyth skated around the net and tapped the puck into the left side before LaBarbera could get into position.

• The Coyotes have given up 30 goals in 14 games this season. The Kings have scored 13 of those goals.

• Phoenix committed just two penalties in the game and none after the first period when Paul Bissonnette was called for fighting and then later boarding .

• Coyotes forward Scottie Upshall scored his first goal since Oct. 17. It was the 50th goal of Upshall's NHL career.

• Phoenix scratched Peter Mueller. LA’s scratches were Peter Harrold and Randy Jones. 

• The Coyotes took just 16 shots on goal, a season-low.  

• Anaheim's James Wisniewski, who delivered a forearm to captain Shane Doan's jaw in Saturday night's game, was supended for two games by the NHL on Monday.
