EDMONTON -- The Coyotes lost a real head-scratcher Monday night at Rexall Place as Edmonton goalie Jeff Deslauriers made 36 saves for his first career shutout.

Phoenix (13-10-1) dominated the first seven minutes of the game. Less than five minutes later, however, Edmonton led 3-0. The Oilers added another goal extremely late in the second period and won 4-0.

The Coyotes outshot the Oilers, 36-25, and had a handful of decent scoring chances in each period. None were converted into goals.

After the game, Head Coach Dave Tippett voiced his displeasure with some of his players just outside the team's dressing room.

"We didn't have enough guys hating to lose," Tippett said. "...You've got to get pissed off in this game. If you're not pissed off about loisng, then you're probably not on the right team. That's as far as I can take that. That's frustrating to watch guys go out there and float around after we're down 3-0. It's very disappointing."

The momentum of the game changed drastically after Edmonton scored the first goal at 7:59 of the first period. Oilers captain Ethan Moreau took a pass from Ryan Potulny off the right boards, skated around Coyotes defenseman Sami Lepisto and forehanded the puck past goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.

Edmonton (10-11-3) took a 2-0 lead on a goal that was credited to defenseman Sheldon Souray at 11:07. Souray sent the puck toward the net from the left corner and Bryzgalov stopped it with his stick. The goal was scored a moment later when Coyotes center Matthew Lombardi’s cross-crease clearing attempt knocked off a skate of teammate David Schlemko and into the goal.

The Oilers won the ensuing faceoff and scored again before the Coyotes knew what hit them (see Key Moment below).

Shawn Horcoff gave Edmonton a 4-0 lead by deflecting a power-play shot by Souray past Bryzgalov with one-tenth of a second left in the second period.

"I can't believe we lost that game 4-0," Phoenix defenseman David Schlemko said.

Indeed, it was just one of those nights for the Coyotes.

After the Oilers "scored" to take a 2-0 lead, the teams lined up for the ensuing faceoff. Seven seconds later, Edmonton's Ales Hemsky capped a two-on-one rush with a nifty backhanded shot around Bryzgalov at 11:14 of the first period. It was Hemsky's 100th NHL goal, and the seven seconds between goals set an Oilers record for least amount of time between goals.

• Edmonton's fourth goal was a power-play goal. Before that goal, the Coyotes had killed 18 consecutive penalties.

• The Coyotes have lost five straight games at Rexall Place. Phoenix's last victory in Edmonton was on Feb. 27, 2007.

• Defenseman David Schlemko, who grew up an Oilers fan in Edmonton, played his first game in Rexall Place.

• The Coyotes scratched Martin Hanzal because of a minor lower-body injury. Edmonton scratched Dean Arsene, Mike Comrie, Nikolai Khabibulin.

• Defenseman Zbynek Michalek took part in the morning skate in full uniform. He still is listed as week-to-week because of a lower-body injury.

• Movie director/hockey fan Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy) attended the game. Smith is researching his next film, a hockey movie tentatively titled Hit Somebody.

"We knew that they'd been struggling, and we felt that we had control of the game and we felt we kept control of the game. You have to give their goalie credit. He bailed them out a lot." "That was tough, giving up a bad goal like that and then seeing them score so soon afterwards. It really gave them all the momentum." "I just went in there and thought about stopping the puck, no matter how I stopped it. If it was with my hand or my head or my stick, I just had to do less thinking, more stopping."
