DUCKS 4, COYOTES 2

By Dave Vest
ANAHEIM –
Five penalties in the third period derailed a comeback bid by the Coyotes at the Honda Center on Saturday afternoon, and the Anaheim Ducks beat Phoenix, 4-2.

The Coyotes (21-13-2), who were playing their fourth road game in six days, pulled to within 3-2 at 3:39 of the third period when defenseman Adrian Aucoin wristed a shot from the right circle past Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller.

The Coyotes, however, couldn't build momentum after that because they had to kill penalties for 6:37 and survive a penalty shot. Daniel Winnik (holding), Jim Vandermeer (cross-checking), Ed Jovanovski (slashing and hooking) and Matthew Lombardi (hooking on a breakaway) were the guilty parties.

"We did everything we could to give the game away," Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said. "We took bad penalty after bad penalty... When you take that many penalties, it just wears too many guys down and it's going to bite you. We did that right until the end of the game, and it bit us at the end of the game."

Ilya Bryzgalov was shaky in goal in the first two periods, but he stopped 17 of 18 shots in the final 20 minutes to keep the Coyotes in the game. Trailing 3-2, he made a terrific glove save on a penalty shot by Adam Marchant at 17:29.

A power-play goal by Bobby Ryan with 20 seconds left sealed Anaheim's victory.

"You look at the standings every day, and we don't seem to be moving much," Marchant told reporters. "But we're getting points in these games. So we've got to start making our push and get ourselves in a playoff spot. It's going to take a lot of effort and sacrifice."

Hiller stopped Phoenix's first 25 shots, but he didn't stop Shane Doan's hard wrister at 12:12 of the second period. Doan's goal, his first since the last time the Coyotes played at Anaheim on Nov. 29, tied the score at 1.

Anaheim (14-14-7) answered Doan's goal just 34 seconds later when a backhanded shot by newcomer Kyle Chipchura from just outside the crease slipped through Bryzgalov and trickled over the line at 12:46.

Jovanovski committed four minor penalties. His second infraction was for holding late in the second period. The Ducks parlayed the man advantage into their third goal when center Ryan Getzlaf wristed a shot off the left post and into the net at 17:26.

With the Ducks leading 3-2, Coyotes forward Scottie Upshall drew a holding penalty on Todd Marchant at 15:08 of the third period. Near the end of the power play, Coyotes defenseman Adrian Aucoin launched a wicked slap shot at Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller from the right point. Hiller snagged it with his glove to preserve the one-goal lead.

• The Coyotes took a season-high 41 shots on goal. Captain Shane Doan led the way with seven, followed closely by defenseman Ed Jovanovski with six. Only forwards Paul Bissonnette and Vernon Fiddler did not register a shot. Fiddler suffered a lower-body injury and played just eight shifts. His injury is not believed to be serious.

• Defenseman Keith Yandle had a terrific scoring chance late in Phoenix's second-period power play with Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller down on the ice, but Yandle's shot from the left side sailed directly into Hiller and he quickly covered the puck.

• Center Robert Lang won 9 of 11 faceoffs on his 39th birthday.

• Forward Paul Bissonnette was given a 10-minute misconduct penalty after trading shoves with several Ducks on his way off the ice at 8:08 of the second period.

• Phoenix will play 12 of its next 15 games at Jobing.com Arena where it has posted a 12-5-0 record.

• The Coyotes scratched Peter Mueller and Sami Lepisto. Both are healthy. Anaheim scratched Evgeny Artyukhin and Steve Eminger.

"We've been preaching discipline for the last three games and obviously we haven't been practicing what we preach. It was very disappointing." "Their power play got two goals for them. That was the difference in the game. Our power play didn't get us any and that's what it comes down to."  "Phoenix had a lot of shots, but not the most dangerous shots. Our defensemen did a pretty good job of taking the middle away, so they had to shoot from an angle. I was able to cut down the angle and the puck just hit me."
