GLENDALE – Michael Frolik scored a goal in regulation and the game-winner in the fifth round of a shootout to lead the Florida Panthers over the Coyotes, 2-1, on Saturday night at Jobing.com Arena.

Florida backup goalie Scott Clemmensen and Coyotes netminder Ilya Bryzgalov were the stars of the game with 40 and 36 saves, respectively.

The Coyotes (12-7-6) had to scramble just to reach the shootout. The Panthers, playing the finale of a three-game West Coast trip, had multiple opportunities to win in overtime after Phoenix winger Ray Whitney was called for hooking at the 1:35 mark. The Coyotes' bench then was penalized for having too many men on the ice at the 2:59 mark, which led to a two-man advantage for Florida (11-14-0) for 36 seconds.

"Taking a hooking penalty in the offensive zone in overtime is just inexcusable," Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said. "We did some good things, but at the end of the day we needed those points and we let one get away."

Bryzgalov made six saves in overtime and Clemmensen made five, including a game-saving one on a shot by Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle on a two-on-one rush.

With the shootout tied 2-2 after four rounds, Coyotes forward Lauri Korpikoski sped in and tried unsuccessfully to wrist a shot past Clemmensen. Frolik won the game for Florida moments later (see KEY MOMENT below).

Radim Vrbata and Scottie Upshall scored Phoenix's shootout goals. Mike Santorelli and Stephen Weiss scored Florida's first two shootout goals.

The Coyotes had numerous chances to score in the first period but Clemmensen blocked all 11 of their shots. The game remained scoreless until the 10:21 mark of the second period when Frolik scored his fifth goal of the season after a turnover by Coyotes defenseman Nolan Yonkman.

Later in the second period, Panthers defenseman Dennis Wideman was penalized for holding the stick, and that led to Martin Hanzal’s seventh goal of the season. Hanzal stationed himself near the top of the crease and a shot by Whitney hit Hanzal's left leg and snuck past Clemmensen at 16:04 of the second period.

With a chance to win the game in hand, Panthers center Michael Frolik backhanded a shot past Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov in the fifth round of the shootout. For Frolik, it was just his second shootout goal in 12 attempts.

• Defenseman Keith Yandle played a season-high 30:38 and took a season-high nine shots on goal.

• The Coyotes dropped to 3-6-3 in games they've fallen behind 1-0, and dropped to 0-1-2 in games vs. teams from the Southeast Division.

• Radim Vrbata's goal in the shootout was his team-high second of the season - in three tries. For his career, Vrbata is 19 for 43 in shootouts (44.1 percent).

• The Coyotes scratched Paul Bissonnette and Sami Lepisto. Both players are healthy.

• The Coyotes flew to Anaheim immediately after the game. Phoenix's next game is on Sunday vs. the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center. The puck drops at 6 p.m. (Arizona time). The game can be seen on Fox Sports Arizona and can be heard on KFNN-AM (1510).
