GLENDALE – Shane Doan flirted with his first NHL hat trick, and the Coyotes beat the Dallas Stars, 5-2, on Saturday night at Jobing.com Arena.

Doan scored two goals and goalie Ilya Bryzgalov made 33 saves as Phoenix (14-8-6) played its final home game before a key stretch in which it will play six road games in a row.

Head Coach Dave Tippett challenged his players on Friday to dictate play in Saturday’s game against Pacific Division-leading Dallas and they did just that from the opening faceoff.

“We wanted to push the pace as quick as we could, and really try to dictate the game on the forecheck,” Tippett said. “I thought we came out in the first period and did that.”

Coyotes winger Ray Whitney slipped a shot between the pads of Stars goaltender Andrew Raycroft at the 6:11 mark of the first period to give Phoenix a 1-0 lead.

Doan notched his first goal of the night moments later when he beat Raycroft to give his team a two-goal advantage. The Coyotes took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission after Doan picked up his second goal on a power play at the 19:37 mark of the period.

At the 3:11 mark the second period, Dallas cut the deficit to 3-1 when James Neal fired a shot past Bryzgalov. The puck hit the crossbar but crossed the line giving Neal his 13th goal of the season.

The intensity picked up in the second period. Dallas’ Brian Sutherby and Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski dropped the gloves at the 8:40 mark after Jovanovski took exception to a hit Sutherby delivered on Coyotes center Eric Belanger.

Leading 3-1 after two periods, Phoenix continued to apply pressure to the Stars (17-10-2) in the third period. Forward Lauri Korpikoski, who helped the Coyotes kill six of seven Dallas power plays, scored a shorthanded goal (see KEY MOMENT below), and Keith Yandle chased Raycroft from the game with his fifth goal of the season with 9:35 left in the game.

With rookie Richard Bachman tending an NHL goal for the first time, Doan played extended shifts late in the game and his teammates tried to get him the puck. Once he had it they cheered for him to shoot. He did several times, but he couldn’t score a third goal.

"That just shows how much admiration there is from the other players for him when all the players are shouting, 'shoot, shoot' just like the fans," Tippett said.

Leading 3-1, Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski was sent to the penalty box for elbowing at the 0:35 mark of the third period.

Coyotes forward Lauri Korpikoski killed any hope the Stars had to rally for a win by getting loose for a breakaway, gathering a pass from Vernon Fiddler and beating Stars goaltender Andrew Raycroft with a slick backhanded shot for his second shorthanded goal of the season.

• Seeking his first career hat trick in his 1,065th NHL game, captain Shane Doan hit the left post with a shot with six minutes left in the third period. Doan settled for his 35th two-goal game in the NHL. Three of Doan's four goals this season have come against Dallas, and he now has 29 against the Stars in his career - the most he has scored against any team.

• Defenseman Keith Yandle notched a season-high three points (one goal, two assists) and upped his point streak to a career-high four games.

• Center Kyle Turris returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch the past two games and won nine of 13 faceoffs.

• Defenseman Nolan Yonkman logged 14:30 of ice time and delivered a team-high five hits.

• Winger Ray Whitney scored his first goal since Nov. 13 when he scored three vs. St. Louis.

• The Coyotes scratched Paul Bissonnette, Sami Lepisto and David Schlemko. All three players are healthy.

• The Coyotes' next game is on Wednesday vs. the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. The puck drops at 5 p.m. (Arizona time). The game can be seen on Fox Sports Arizona Plus and can be heard on XTRA Sports 910 (AM).
