GLENDALE – Captain Shane Doan scored two goals to lead the Coyotes to a 6-3 defeat of the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night in the second game in as many nights at Jobing.com Arena.

Scottie Upshall chipped in a goal and two assists, and Keith Yandle had three assists as the Coyotes (17-12-7) snapped a streak of four games in which they didn't score more than one goal.

Remarkably, the teams combined to score seven goals in the first 16:07 of the game. Doan and Ray Whitney notched the first two goals for Phoenix, but the Kings answered both goals.

The Coyotes gained some separation at the 12:16 mark of the first period when Upshall fired a wrist shot past Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick for his ninth goal of the season. LA’s Alec Martinez was called for tripping at the 13:59 mark, and that led to Brett MacLean’s power-play goal moments later. It was MacLean’s first career goal in his first career NHL game (see KEY MOMENT below).

“As little that had gone in the net the last four or five games, to see seven goals scored in the first period, I’ve got to say it probably wasn’t what I was expecting,” Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said. “But it’s good to see some chances go in.”

Doan, looking to add some insurance to the lead, scored his second goal on a power play at the 6:11 mark of the second period. Less than four minutes later, Kyle Turris notched his sixth of the season when his wrist shot beat Quick at 10:03 and chased him out of the game.

Coyotes enforcer Paul Bissonnette had his second fight in as many nights. This time he dropped the gloves with LA’s Kevin Westgarth.

And for the second time this season, Doan again was looking for his first career hat trick late in a home game. On Phoenix's last power-play opportunity of the night, Doan had the puck go off his stick and hit a post.

Ilya Bryzgalov picked up his 13th win of the season as he stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced. Quick, who entered the game with a 1.86 goals-against average, surrendered six goals on 18 shots before giving way to Jonathan Bernier, who stopped all 13 shots he faced in relief.

Los Angeles (22-13-1) had entered the game with a four-game winning streak. 

At the 15:34 mark of the first period, Coyotes forward Brett MacLean, playing in his first career NHL game after being recalled from the American Hockey League just hours earlier, knocked a a slick cross-ice pass from Scottie Upshall past Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick to give his team a 4-2 advantage.

It was MacLean’s first career goal, and it also ended up being the game-winner.

• Forward Brett MacLean became the first Coyotes player to score his first NHL goal in his first NHL game since Daniel Winnik did it on Oct. 4, 2007.

• Defenseman Keith Yandle tied a career-high with three assists.

• Center Martin Hanzal did not play because of an upper-body injury he suffered in Tuesday's game. Winger Radim Vrbata, who suffered a lower-body injury during last Thursday's game at San Jose, missed his third straight game. Meanwhile, forward Taylor Pyatt missed his fourth game since being placed on the injured reserve list with an upper-body injury suffered vs. Pittsburgh on Dec. 20. 

• Captain Shane Doan scored two goals in a game for the 36th time in his NHL career.

• The Coyotes set a season-high for goals scored in a period with four in the first 20 minutes.

• Phoenix upped its record to 14-2-4 in games in which it has scored the first goal.

• The Coyotes scratched Martin Hanzal (upper-body injury), David Schlemko, and Radim Vrbata (lower-body injury).
