GLENDALE -- Los Angeles forward Jarret Stoll scored an acrobatic goal early in the third period to lift the Kings to a 4-3 win over the Coyotes on Saturday night in the second game of a home-and-home series at Jobing.com Arena.

The Coyotes (24-16-9), who beat LA, 2-0, on Thursday night at the Staples Center, trailed 3-0 before the game was 14 minutes old. They rallied, however, and made the Kings scramble to beat them for the first time in four tries this season.

Justin Williams, Drew Doughty and Alec Martinez scored goals to give LA a seemingly comfortable 3-0 lead at the 13:33 mark of the first period. But Coyotes forward Lee Stempniak scored a goal 52 seconds after Martinez scored to keep Phoenix in the game. Taylor Pyatt was originally credited with Phoenix's first goal but it was later credited to Stempniak because Pyatt's shot hit Stempniak's glove before getting by Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.

Coyotes center Martin Hanzal scored a pretty power-play goal at the 3:05 mark of the second period to pull Phoenix to 3-2.

Sensing they had clawed back into the game, the Coyotes amped up their physical play as the second period played out. With the Kings on their heels, Stempniak tied the score at 3 with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle with 1:53 left in the second period.

“We needed that,” Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said regarding the physical play. “We needed some push back. We were light on our sticks early.”

The Kings (25-22-1), who had won just twice in 12 games before Saturday, outworked the Coyotes on a shift early in the third period and their hustle produced Stoll’s goal (see KEY MOMENT below).

Trailing 4-3, Tippett pulled goalie Ilya Bryzgalov with about 90 seconds left in the third period and the move nearly produced a goal. Coyotes captain Shane Doan had a nice scoring chance in the final minute but his one-timer from the left circle sailed wide of the LA net. 

Quick stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced to pick up his 20th victory of the season. Bryzgalov stopped 29 of the 33 shots he faced in the losing effort.

With the scored tied at 3, Kings forward Jarret Stoll dived and knocked the rebound of a Jack Johnson slap shot past Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and into the net at the 4:57 mark of the third period.

“That winning goal was a special kind of shift," Kings Head Coach Terry Murray said. "That’s a shift you pull off, show your team and encourage them to follow that template."

• Forward Lee Stempniak scored two goals to take over as the team leader in goals with 14. He has scored five goals in the last five games. 

• Defenseman Keith Yandle notched two assists to extend his point streak to seven games. 

• Defenseman Michal Rozsival suffered a lower-body injury in the second period and did not play in the third period. His injury will be evaluated further on Sunday.

• The Coyotes delivered 42 hits in the game. Forward Paul Bissonnette led the way with nine hits in 7:51 of ice time.

• The Coyotes scratched Ed Jovanovski (lower-body injury), Brett MacLean and Derek Morris (lower-body injury). Jovanovski has missed five games since being injured Jan.13 vs. Toronto. Morris suffered his injury in Thursday's game vs. LA.

• The Coyotes' next game is Tuesday vs. Edmonton at Jobing.com Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m. (Arizona time). The game can be seen on Fox Sports Arizona and can be heard on XTRA Sports 910 (AM).

A lot of guys were throwing their bodies around and it gave us some energy and got us back in the game." "I think (rallying) shows good character in our team. Obviously we didn’t get the outcome we wanted, but I think it did show good character in our team to come back down three."
