DALLAS -- After getting a game-tying goal from winger Loui Eriksson late in the third period, the Dallas Stars went on to a 2-1 shootout win over the Coyotes at the American Airlines Center on Monday night.
Dallas center Mike Ribeiro had the deciding goal in the shootout, knocking the puck under the right arm of Phoenix goaltender
Mike Smith. Eriksson also scored for Dallas in the shootout.
Shane Doan scored a shootout goal for Phoenix (0-1-1), but Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen made saves on shootout attempts by
Patrick O'Sullivan and
Radim Vrbata.
Eriksson scored his regulation goal (see
KEY MOMENT below) with 27.1 seconds left, nearly 15 minutes after Vrbata made the score 1-0 with a power-play goal at 5:55 of the third. Vrbata's first goal of the season, which was scored on a tap-in, came just nine seconds after Dallas (2-1-0) was whistled for having too many men on the ice for the second time in the game.
Phoenix's goal came on its sixth power play of the game. Prior to allowing that tally, Dallas had been 9-for-9 on the penalty kill at home this season.
The game was scoreless after 40 minutes. In the opening period, Phoenix had the bulk of the quality scoring chances. At 11:17, Lehtonen denied
Raffi Torres at close range and a shot by Doan at 13:37 struck a post.

Dallas and Phoenix combined for five power plays in the first 20 minutes but neither side converted a single chance into anything tangible.
In the second period, the Stars and Coyotes combined to go on the power play just twice. The best opportunity of the frame came for Dallas at 4:01 when a shot by Steve Ott was quashed by Smith who came up with a solid glove save.
And just over a minute before Vrbata's goal, Eriksson nearly put the home side ahead at 4:50 but instead saw his 13-foot wrister clang off the right post instead of finding the back of the net.
Just 25 seconds into overtime, the Stars put themselves behind the eight ball when captain Brenden Morrow was called for a high stick. The Dallas PK rose to the challenge and killed Phoenix's eighth power play of the game.
