LOS ANGELES -- Drew Doughty scored a goal 38 seconds into overtime to lift the Los Angeles Kings to a 1-0 victory over the Coyotes on Thursday night at the Staples Center, and Phoenix closed a four-game trip with a 1-2-1 record.

With the win, Los Angeles (20-14-7) improved its record to 5-0-3 under new Head Coach Darryl Sutter and has earned points in nine straight games, two shy of the franchise record.

Doughty's goal (see KEY MOMENT below) ended a duel between Coyotes goalie Mike Smith and Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.

Quick made 22 saves in regulation for his NHL-leading sixth shutout this season and 20th of his career. Smith stopped 27 shots.

Quick matched Smith and weathered a 7-0 shot advantage by the Coyotes in the first seven minutes of the third, including a nifty glove save on a shot by Lauri Korpikoski to keep the score 0-0.

Phoenix (19-17-5) reached the halfway point of its season on a frustrating note. Head Coach Dave Tippett argued that Doughty's goal should not have been allowed because of goalie interference on Kings defenseman Jack Johnson.

"If they don't give the goal to Johnson, then it's goalie interference," Tippett said. "If he comes in and puts his leg in front of Mike Smith's leg so (Smith) can't make a stop that is goalie interference. It's as simple as that."

Kings forward Dustin Penner nearly scored late in the game but his shot hit the right post with 5:47 left in regulation. Later, Anze Kopitar's wrist shot found Smith's chest with 48 seconds to go.

Stoll and drove in on the left side of Coyotes goalie Mike Smith. Doughty's pass slid into the crease and then into the net off Phoenix defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson as Kings defenseman Jack Johnson crashed the net.

The goal was Doughty's first since Nov. 10.

"To finally contribute on the score sheet with a goal for the team, and most important, we get the win, I was real happy," Doughty said. "I just tried to drive the net. Sometimes you've got to score those dirty goals like that."

• What follows is the NHL's official ruling on Drew Doughty's goal: "At 00:38 of overtime in the Coyotes/Kings game, video review upheld the referee's call on the ice that the goalposts were completely on the pegs when the puck crossed the goal line and the puck went into the net in a legal fashion. Good Goal Los Angeles."

Aucoin

• Defenseman Adrian Aucoin was hit in the face with the puck in the final minute of the first period. Aucoin immediately skated to the bench and headed to the dressing room ahead of his teammates for the first intermission. He did not return to the game and the Coyotes played the final 40-plus minutes with just five defensemen. After the game, Head Coach Dave Tippett said Aucoin would be re-evaluated on Friday in Phoenix.

• The Coyotes have been shut out five times this season - twice by Jonathan Quick and the Los Angeles Kings.

• The Coyotes won 32 of 52 faceoffs. Center Daymond Langkow led the way by winning 13 of 20 draws.

Chipchura

• Center Kyle Chipchura, whom Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said has been the team's best player lately, played another solid game. Chipchura logged a season-high 16:52, took two shots on goal, delivered six hits, blocked two shots and won 11 of 18 faceoffs.

• The Coyotes played without forward Raffi Torres who served his second game of a two-game suspension handed down by the NHL on Monday for charging Minnesota's Nate Prosser during Saturday's game. Phoenix also played minus centers Martin Hanzal (upper-body injury) and Boyd Gordon (lower-body injury). Both players are on the injured reserve list.

• The Coyotes scratched Derek Morris, Raffi Torres and David Rundblad.

• The Coyotes' next game is Saturday vs. the New York Islanders at Jobing.com Arena. The puck drops at 6 p.m. (Arizona time). The game can be seen on Fox Sports Arizona and can be heard on Money Radio 1510 (AM).
