GLENDALE -- Mike Smith made 28 saves in the Phoenix Coyotes' 3-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night in the preseason finale for both teams.
Smith was perfect through two periods, and only a fluke goal prevented the shutout.

"It was definitely a good way to end the preseason," Smith said. "I felt pretty good most of camp. Tonight was one of those games where pucks were hitting me and I was in good position."
The Sharks (5-1) spoiled Smith's shutout bid midway just over eight minutes into the final period when defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic's shot from the right point deflected off Coyotes defenseman David Schlemko and over Smith's right shoulder.
After a scoreless first period, the Coyotes broke it open with three even-strength goals in the second.
Hanzal started the scoring with a goal at 0:30, Lauri Korpikoski made it 2-0 with a goal at 7:15, and Taylor Pyatt scored a wraparound goal at 10:36. San Jose's Thomas Greiss gave up all three goals before being replaced after two periods.
Coyotes forward Paul Bissonnette had to be helped off the ice midway through the second period after colliding with San Jose's Torrey Mitchell. Bissonnette returned in the third period.
The Coyotes will open their regular-season schedule on Oct. 8 at San Jose.
