PANTHERS (2-2-2) at COYOTES (2-3-1)
Season series: The Arizona Coyotes swept two games from the Florida Panthers last season and have won the past three games between the teams. Florida's last victory came in a shootout, 2-1 in Arizona on Dec. 4, 2010. Coyotes goalie Mike Smith stopped 53 of 55 shots in the two games last season, which were played nine days apart in March.
Panthers team scope: This is the finale of a four-game road trip that has been very successful for Florida to this point. The Panthers are 2-0-1 and their offense came alive in the most recent game against the Colorado Avalanche, a 4-3 overtime win capped by Brad Boyes' power-play goal. The Panthers had scored five goals in their first five games. Goaltenders Roberto Luongo and Al Montoya and the defense have kept them competitive. The Panthers team goals-against average of 2.17 ranked 12th in the NHL entering games Friday.
Coyotes team scope: Arizona didn't practice Friday after getting shut out 2-0 by the Minnesota Wild on Thursday to complete a brief two-game road trip that started with a 4-3 shootout loss to the Nashville Predators. The Coyotes have lost three straight following back-to-back wins. They are back on the road after Saturday for a four-game trip. Forward Justin Hodgman was recalled Friday from Portland of the American Hockey League, where he was scoreless in three games this season. The 26-year-old will be looking to make his NHL debut after spending the 2011-12 season playing in Finland and the past two seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League. Hodgman led the Coyotes during the preseason with four goals and five points in five games.
