Preview: Flames at Coyotes
Calgary Flames vs. Phoenix Coyotes

Season series: This is the first meeting this season. The teams split the season series in 2011-12, but the Flames claimed at least a point in all four contests (2-0-2). Phoenix had won six straight against Calgary before the Flames won the final two matchups of last season.

Big story: Both teams are trying to climb closer to the top eight of the Western Conference.

Coyotes: Save for one bad night against the League-leading Chicago Blackhawks, February has been a pretty good month for Phoenix. After a slow start to the season, the Coyotes have stabilized with a 5-2-1 stretch to start the month.

Goaltender Mike Smith has won three of his past four starts, and allowed only eight goals in those contests. He was injured earlier in the season after two substandard outings to open the season, but Smith has a 2.30 goals against average and a .914 save percentage in his eight appearances this month.

The Coyotes are 5-1-0 at home and 8-4-0 overall against the Flames under Head Coach Dave Tippett, and will face Flames rookie goalie Daniel Taylor, who has played just one NHL period, tonight. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Phoenix is 11-1-2 all-time vs goalies making their first start.

Forward Dave Moss, who played more than 300 games for the Flames until coming to the Coyotes in the off-season, will play against Calgary for the first time.

"It's exciting," Moss said. "... They gave me a chance. I had a great six years there. Their organization is first class, and I was treated great and I met a lot of great people." (Click here to see more.)

Flames: Calgary appeared to be headed for a fourth loss in five games, but the Flames rallied for a 4-3 victory Sunday night against the Dallas Stars. They have defeated the Stars twice in the past week, and have now scored at least four goals in four of their past seven games.

Michael Cammalleri's return from injury has been a boost to the offense. He tallied four goals in the two victories against the Stars, giving Calgary five players with at least four goals. Joey MacDonald made his first start for the Flames since being added via waivers, and stopped 27 of 30 shots.

Martin Hanzal

Who's hot: Coyotes center Martin Hanzal had two goals and an assist in Phoenix's last game, a 5-3 win against Columbus. Hanzal has six goals and eight points in his past eight games. Defenseman Zbynek Michalek leads the team with 41 blocked shots this season and ranks 2nd in the NHL in that category... ... Defenseman Dennis Wideman has at least one point in seven of his past nine games, and three goals during that span.

Injury report: Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris (upper body), forward Radim Vrbata (lower body), center Matthew Lombardi (upper body) and defenseman David Schlemko (upper body) are out. ... The Flames have five guys -- goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff (knee), and forwards Mikael Backlund (knee), Sven Baertschi (hip), Lance Bouma (knee) and Paul Byron (hand) -- on injured reserve.
