GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - The new-look NHL wants a high-scoring game, and it got one in Arizona on Tuesday night.

Petr Nedved scored off a rebound 1:51 into overtime to give the Phoenix Coyotes a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

Nedved's second goal of the season came after goalie Patrick Lalime blocked Zybnek Michalek's shot from deep in the left circle.

"I was in front of the net," Nedved said, "and that's where usually a lot of good things happen."

The score capped a wild night that saw eight goals in the second and third period.

"I think that's all part of the new NHL," said the Coyotes' Mike Johnson, who scored his first goal of the season. "You see a lot more leads lost in the league this year than you did in years past. It's just a little bit harder to sit back and protect leads with the penalties that they call."

Jamal Mayers scored twice for the Blues, who have lost three in a row by one goal, two of them in overtime.

"Basically, we keep shooting ourselves in the foot," St. Louis coach Mike Kitchen said. "We get a lead and we don't know how to protect it, then we make a mistake and it's in our net."

Mike Comrie, who sat out the Coyotes' game Sunday against Anaheim as a healthy scratch, had a goal and two assists.

"I realize that as a professional athlete you can't take things for granted," Comrie said. "You have to work hard every game and play within the system. When you do that, success happens as a group."

Mayers' second goal at 10:50 of the third, on a shot that bounced off goalie David LeNeveu into the net, put St. Louis up 4-3. But Ladislav Nagy, who used to play for St. Louis, scored on a backhander on a power play at 11:56 to tie it at 4.

Ryan Johnson and Jeff Hoggan scored in an 18-second span of the second period to put St. Louis ahead 3-2.

Johnson's first goal of the season, on a power-play rebound of Hoggan's shot, tied it at 2 with 3:53 left in the period. Hoggan then stole the puck from the Coyotes' Derek Morris and scored on a breakaway to put the Blues ahead for the first time, 3-2 with 3:35 left in the second.

Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky praised the "go-to" players on his team for coming through, something that hasn't happened often.

"The success of professional sports teams always hinges on the guys that are go-to guys," he said. "It was like that when I played. I understand the amount of pressure that they're under and sometimes you're pressing a little too much. The skill of those guys came forward."

The Coyotes opened the scoring 32 seconds into the second period.

Mike Leclerc took a pass from Boyd Devereaux, then shot from a tough angle between the left circle and goal line. The puck slipped into the net to the left of Lalime.

St. Louis tied it on Mayers' one-timer from just inside the left circle at 4:46, and Mike Johnson put the Coyotes back in front midway through the period.

Comrie tied it at 3 at 2:47 of third with his first goal of the season.

Notes: The Coyotes outshot the Blues 5-0 in the overtime. ... The Phoenix goalie Curtis Joseph, one shy of his 400th career victory, had the night off but will be back in the net for Thursday night's home game against Calgary. ... St. Louis opened a three-game road trip. ... The Blues killed eight of nine penalties to improve to 28-of-32 for the game.
