GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Geoff Sanderson has become the Phoenix Coyotes' shootout specialist.

Sanderson and Ladislav Nagy scored in the tiebreaker to lift the Coyotes to a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night.

``I'm lucky that I get an opportunity to go in the shootout,'' said Sanderson, who has three goals in Phoenix's four shootouts. ``As long as I keep scoring I guess I'll get to keep shooting.''

After both teams went scoreless in the opening round, the Oilers' Ryan Smyth scored with a quick wrist shot to Curtis Joseph's stick side. Sanderson answered when he faked Jussi Markkanen to the ice with a forehand deke, then pulled the puck back and scored on a wrist shot.

Ales Hemsky missed the net wide on Edmonton's final attempt before Nagy recorded the winner over Markkanen's right shoulder.

``It looked like he cheated a little to his glove side, which left his stick side a little bit open,'' Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said. ``We talked about it a little bit on the bench. Usually we don't talk about it but this time we did.''

Oleg Saprykin sent the game into overtime when he gathered a rebound in front of the crease, pivoted around Oilers defenseman Chris Pronger and fired the puck past Markkanen with 3:41 remaining.

``I take the onus on that one,'' Smyth said. ``I didn't get the puck in deep enough, turned it over and then it was in our net.''

Smyth and Jason Smith scored in regulation for the Oilers, who lost for the fourth time in five games. Edmonton's Georges Laraque was credited with his first goal since March 16, 2004, when newly acquired Coyotes defenseman Dennis Seidenberg tapped the puck past Joseph's outstretched glove into his own net.

Mike Comrie and Mike Johnson each had a goal for the Coyotes, who have won four of five.

Phoenix is 2-0 in shootouts at home and 3-1 overall. The Oilers fell to 4-3 in shootouts, 2-3 on the road.

The Oilers tied it 2-2 with 14:16 remaining on Seidenberg's miscue. Laraque flipped a short wrist shot off Joseph's glove. But Seidenberg, acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday for forward Petr Nedved, reached into the crease and deflected the rebound into the net.

Smith made it 3-2 for Edmonton when he took a pass from Radek Dvorak at the top of the right circle, took one stride and blasted the puck past Curtis Joseph for his fourth goal.

``At least we were trying in the third, which is more than I can say for the first two periods,'' Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. ``At least we started trying. It was a pretty pathetic effort by our group.''

Comrie gave Phoenix a 1-0 lead when he beat Markkanen from just below the left circle. Smyth tied it at 15:24 of the period when he slipped behind the Phoenix defense to take a pass from Steve Staios and scored from the top of the left circle.

Johnson put the Coyotes back in front 2-1 when he tipped Fredrik Sjostrom's shot from the outer hashes of the right circle past Markkanen with 47.8 seconds left in the second period.

``It's nice to battle back after we gave up the lead and get that winning feeling after the game,'' Johnson said.

Phoenix had an apparent goal by Shane Doan waved off earlier in the period when referees Chris Rooney and Brad Watson determined Johnson interfered with Markkanen in the crease.

``We looked at the tape and the referee made a good call,'' Gretzky said.

Notes: The Coyotes have put a puck into their own net for an opposing goal in three straight games. ... Laraque's goal was his 42nd in 462 career games. ... Coyotes D Paul Mara was penalized for using an illegally curved stick midway through the second period, leading to an Edmonton two-man advantage. Phoenix killed the penalty but Gretzky was angry after the game. ``It was stupidity on our part,'' he said. ``There's no reason to have an illegally curved stick in this day and age.'' When told Mara didn't know his stick was illegal, Gretzky smirked. ``I'm not buying that,'' he said. ``These guys look at their sticks all day long.'' ... Before the game, the Coyotes inducted former Winnipeg standout Tomas Steen into the team's ring of honor. Steen, the franchise leader in assists, had his number 25 jersey retired by the then-Jets on May 6, 1995. Steen joined Gretzky and former WHA and NHL great Bobby Hull in the Coyotes' ring of honor.
