GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Steve Reinprecht made quite a first impression on his new coach.
Less than 24 hours after being traded to Phoenix, Reinprecht scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Coyotes a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
"He played very well," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said of his new acquisition. "I'm sure he's tired. He played in Calgary (Wednesday night) and then flew to Phoenix (Thursday morning). He look really good and gave us some speed up the middle. This was a nice start for him, and nice to see him get the winning goal."
Reinprecht was dealt along with goalie Philippe Sauve from Calgary in exchange for goalie Brian Boucher and left wing Mike Leclerc.
"I like this a lot," Reinprecht said. "The guys are really good and it's really a welcome feeling and nice environment. It's a first class organization and everything's great with the coaching staff."
The 29-year-old center lifted a backhander past Kings goalie Mattieu Garon as the last of three shooters called upon by Gretzky.
Both teams had numerous chances in the overtime session, but Curtis Joseph and Garon played brilliantly in goal. Joseph finished with 34 saves and Garon had 31.
"We certainly had our chances to win the hockey game in the third period and in overtime," Kings coach Andy Murray said. "Two efforts now back to back that were solid efforts against Anaheim and Phoenix here."
The Kings struck first when Alexander Frolov took a centering pass from Luc Robitaille and beat Curtis Joseph in close at 5:47.
Just seconds earlier, Frolov appeared to beat Joseph with a wrist shot coming down the right wing, but his shot bounced off the right post and landed behind the Phoenix net.
Dave Scatchard drove in a wrist shot off Shane Doane's centering pass to tie the game at 1. Scatchard's 11th goal of the season came at 9:42 of the second.
Scatchard, who was acquired in a November trade with Boston, has three goals in three games.
"I'm starting to feel bit better out there," he said. "I'm getting a little more settled here, so hopefully I can just keep going and get better from here."
Notes: Reinprecht appeared to score in regulation, beating Garon from the right side of the net. But goal was waived off by referee Mike Hassenfratz because he whistled a penalty on Kings center Derek Armstrong for interference before Reinprecht touched the puck. ... Reinprecht had 10 goals and 19 assists in 52 games with the Flames.
