GLENDALE, Ariz. - The St. Louis Blues beat the Coyotes 3-1 on Saturday night in front of 15,893 spectators at Jobing.com Arena.
St. Louis, which has won four of its past five games, again received stellar goaltending from Chris Mason, who made 26 saves, and got goals from Jay McClement, David Perron and Andy McDonald.
“We have too many guys not working hard and too many guys are making the same mistakes over and over,” Coyotes Head Coach Wayne Gretzky said. “Consequently, you are not going to be successful. Right now, we just don’t seem to have any sort of passion or energy to play hard … we need every player on the team competing."
Olli Jokinen redirected a Keith Yandle shot for Phoenix's only goal.
“We’re just having a tough time scoring goals,” said defenseman Ed Jovanovski, who helped screen Mason on Jokinen's goal. “One (bad) break kind of beats us every night. We have to find a way to, when we do get our chances, to capitalize … one goal each and every game won’t do it.”
Ilya Bryzgalov made 27 saves and kept the Coyotes in the game most of the night.
“They deserved to win the hockey game,” Gretzky said. “I thought Bryzgalov was good again.”
The Blues took a 1-0 lead in the second period courtesy of McClement. While playing four-on-four, McClement took a pass from Alex Steen, cut to the center and put the puck over Bryzgalov's left shoulder at 15:57.
St. Louis upped its lead to 2-0 at 3:11 of the third period on a power play. Perron took the puck at the blue line, skated in, cut to the slot, then nailed a shot off the left post and in for his ninth goal.
"I saw the corner open and fired the puck that way," Perron told reporters. "The coaches pointed out that the top shelf could be open, but this game is so fast that you really don't remember what coaches said in scouting meetings. You just shoot."
The Coyotes cut the Blues lead in half when Jokinen scored his 21st goal at 14:08 on their third power play of the game.

“It was a good play by (Keith Yandle) getting a puck to the net and I was just doing what is asked of me in front of the net,” Jovanovski said.
From there, the Coyotes showed urgency in their attempt to get the tying goal but couldn't. McDonald scored his goal with 1:00 left to cap a nifty odd-man rush with Keith Tkachuk.
“At 2-1, they are going to go into a defensive shell so we are going to get some chances and opportunities,” Gretzky said. “We didn’t convert on them.”
• Defenseman Derek Morris and forward Daniel Winnik were healthy scratches for the Coyotes. Forward Peter Mueller was named an alternate captain in place of Morris. The Blues scratched forward Dan Hinote and defenseman Tyson Strachan.
• Mason made his 18th consecutive start. In his past five games, Mason has allowed five goals.
• McClement extended his goal-scoring streak to three games. He has three goals in that period.
• The Blues outshot the Coyotes 30-27. The Coyotes had 57 scoring opportunities in the game (11 missed shots, 19 shots blocked). Jokinen and defenseman Zbynek Michalek co-led the Coyotes with four shots on goal.
• Coyotes center Steven Reinprecht won 9 of 13 faceoffs.
