Lightning 8, Coyotes 3
Phoenix Coyotes 3, Tampa Bay Lightning 8

By Associated Press
TAMPA BAY -- Teddy Purcell notched his first career hat trick, Vincent Lecavalier produced a goal and four assists and the Tampa Bay Lightning ended Phoenix's eight-game winning streak with an 8-3 victory over the Coyotes on Wednesday night at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Purcell had one of Tampa Bay's five first-period goals, and added two more during the second.

Steven Stamkos scored his NHL-leading 41st goal this season, and Martin St. Louis also had two goals and an assist for the Lightning (35-18-7), who are 6-3-2 during a 12-game homestand. Adam Hall had the other Tampa Bay goal.

The Coyotes (33-20-9) trailed 7-0 before getting goals from Martin Hanzal, Kyle Turris and David Schlemko. The eight goals is the most allowed by Phoenix this season.

Purcell scored on Tampa Bay's first shot against Coyotes backup goalie Jason LaBarbera 1:59 into the game. St. Louis' rebound goal, which stopped a personal nine-game goal drought, made it 2-0 just 62 seconds later.

Phoenix's No. 1 goalie Ilya Bryzgalov had started the previous 19 games, including Tuesday night's 3-2 overtime victory at Philadelphia. Over the stretch, dating to Jan. 11, LaBarbera played eight minutes during a Feb. 2 game.

St. Louis (7:54), Stamkos (14:55) and Lecavalier (17:54) extended the lead to 5-0 with first-period, power-play goals. It was Stamkos' first goal in six games.

With the defeat, and San Jose's win over Pittsburgh, the Coyotes slipped to second place in the Pacific Division standings and fourth place in the Western Conference standings.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Dave Vest of phoenixcoyotes.com compiled this recap.

Leading 2-0, Lightning forward Martin St. Louis backhanded the rebound of a shot by Vincent LeCavalier past Coyotes goalie Jason LaBarbera during a power play at 7:54 of the first period. The goal deflated the Coyotes and they never recovered.

Doan
• Captain Shane Doan became the franchise’s all-time games played leader tonight when he played in his 1,099th career game. Doan passed former Coyotes captain Teppo Numminen for the games played lead. Click here to watch a pre-game interview with Doan about his feat.

• The Coyotes played minus winger Scottie Upshall whom the NHL suspended for two games on Wednesday for an illegal hit delivered to Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Oskars Bartulis in Tuesday's game.

• Phoenix allowed a season-high eight goals. During its recent eight-game winning streak, the Coyotes allowed just 13 goals.

• Defenseman David Schlemko returned to the lineup after missing 15 games because of an upper-body injury. Schlemko played 16:46 and notched a goal and an assist. The goal was his first of the season and his first since Nov. 14, 2009.

• The Coyotes scratched Paul Bissonnette, Scottie Upshall (suspended) and Ray Whitney (lower-body injury).

• The Coyotes' next game is Friday vs. Columbus at Nationwide Arena. The puck drops at 5 p.m. (Arizona time). The game can be seen on Fox Sports Arizona and can be heard on XTRA Sports 910 (AM).

"You can see that our guys just didn’t have any gas in the tank. It’s just one of those games that you get rid of, burn the tape, don’t even look at it and just move on." "For us to come out and hang (Jason LaBarbera) out to dry like we did, it was unfortunate and disappointing. I think that’s what caused so much emotion from our guys. 'Barbs' is a such a team guy and we wish for a lot better than that for him." "We felt pretty good about beating these guys. They had been playing well, they had been on a streak, but it felt good to have three days off and get the guys back here together. We played really hard."
