LOS ANGELES -- Jonathan Bernier recorded his third NHL shutout and Jarret Stoll scored a power-play goal with 7:47 remaining, leading the Los Angeles Kings to a 1-0 victory over the Coyotes on Thursday night at the Staples Center.

Coyotes defenseman Rostislav Klesla, playing his second game with Phoenix (33-23-10) after a trade with Columbus on Monday, was called for high-sticking Anze Kopitar 41 seconds before Stoll beat Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov through a screen with a one-timer from the left point on the Kings' 18th and final shot of the game.

The Coyotes have lost a season-high five straight games (0-4-1) after an eight-game winning streak that put them atop the Pacific Division for 10 days.

Coming off a sobering 7-4 home loss to Detroit on Monday in which Jonathan Quick surrendered six goals on 24 shots before getting pulled in the third period, the Kings (36-24-4) went with Bernier in net. The rest of the team got the message - at least defensively - and held Phoenix to one shot on net through the first 14 minutes. Bernier finished with 25 saves in his 18th start of the season.

The loss dropped the Coyotes to sixth place in the Western Conference standings; Phoenix, Los Angeles and Chicago all have 76 points.

Bryzgalov, who shut out the Kings on Jan. 20 at Staples Center with 36 saves, faced only four shots in the opening period - one of them Justin Williams' tricky 25-foot deflection of Willie Mitchell's wrist shot from the left point at 10:56 of the period.

Right wing Dustin Penner made his Kings debut after joining the club in a trade from Edmonton on Monday. He became the 22nd player to appear in a regular-season game with both Southern California teams - LA and Anaheim.

Trailing 1-0 late in the third period, Coyotes defenseman Rostislav Klesla nearly scored his second goal in as many games with Phoenix when he snuck behind LA defenders and swept a slick, backhanded pass from Taylor Pyatt towards the LA goal. Jonathan Bernier made a nice save with 2:33 left to preserve his shutout.

"We played a solid road game. I don’t think there was a ton of chances either way, but we gave ourselves a chance to win. Unfortunately we couldn’t get the one (goal) that we needed.” "We had opportunities to win, had opportunities there in the game and we couldn’t find ways to score. Right now every point is so huge that you have to find ways to get one to give yourself a chance." "I think the main thing was staying patient. We knew we were getting our chances, and maybe we weren’t getting a lot of shots, but we were doing really good things. It was a matter of time."
