GLENDALE
-- Josh Gorges scored a goal 1:45 into overtime and the Montreal Canadiens edged the Coyotes, 3-2, on Thursday night at Jobing.com Arena.

Brian Gionta had a goal and an assist, and Travis Moen also scored for the Canadiens (6-7-2), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Mikkel Boedker and Raffi Torres scored goals for the Coyotes (7-5-2), who lost for the second time in three games, but have earned points in seven of eight.

"It's disappointing when you felt like we had a pretty good week and were feeling good about ourselves," Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said. "It's the desperation level that you need to win, and that desperation level led to a lot of one-on-one battles that we lost."

The Coyotes have not beaten the Canadiens since Dec. 9, 1998 - a span of 13 games.

Torres tied the score with 14:50 left, taking advantage of a convenient bounce. Keith Yandle's initial rebound shot dropped into the crease, just to the left of Canadiens goalie Carey Price's leg, and Torres flipped the puck into the open right side of the net to make it 2-2.

Boedker gave Phoenix a 1-0 lead at 5:43 of the first. Cal O'Reilly passed the puck from behind the net to Boedker on the doorstep in front of Price for an easy one-timed goal, his first since Oct. 13.

Gionta made it 1-1 at 3:28 of the second, stealing the puck off Boyd Gordon's stick behind the net and beating Mike Smith on a quick wraparound.

Moen made it 2-1 with 2:14 left in the period, taking a pass from Gionta and scoring on a wrist shot from the left circle, just inside the hash marks.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Dave Vest of phoenixcoyotes.com compiled this recap.

Canadiens defenseman Josh Georges scored his first goal of the season via a slap shot with 3:15 left in overtime that beat Coyotes goalie Mike Smith cleanly.

"The puck was squeezed out to me and I thought I'd try and put it on net," Gorges said. "We knew it was going to be a battle. You have to work against this team."

• Before the game, three Coyotes - Shane Doan, Keith Yandle and Ray Whitney - were announced as nominees on the 2012 NHL All-Star Fan Ballot. Voting begins Nov. 14. Click here to read more.

•  U.S. Senator John McCain dropped the ceremonial first puck as part of Military Heroes Appreciation Night. Click here to watch a video of McCain's press conference at Jobing.com Arena on Thursday.

• The Coyotes played minus center Daymond Langkow. Langkow has been granted a leave of absence from the team because of a death in his family.

• Center Martin Hanzal returned to the lineup after missing two games because of a lower-back injury suffered last week at Colorado. Hanzal played 16:52, took four shots and delivered five hits in his 300th NHL game.

• Center Cal O'Reilly notched an assist on Mikkel Boedker's goal. It was O'Reilly's first point with Phoenix since being traded to the Coyotes by Nashville.

• The Coyotes scratched Paul Bissonnette and Daymond Langkow.

• The Coyotes' next game is Saturday vs. San Jose at HP Pavilion. The puck drops at 8:30 p.m. (Arizona time). The game can be heard on XTRA Sports 910 (AM).

"I think we came out with a quick goal but we didn’t build on it. I think our compete level has to rise up. I think as a team had we been more physical we would have been able to take the game away more, but just the compete level has to rise up a little bit and our awareness in our zone." "We wanted to get physical, we wanted to skate a little more. I think we did that as the game went on and unfortunately there’s no more periods. There’s that overtime, but it’s short and four-on-four... I think we were a little rusty and that happens." "We needed it... We did what we have to do to get the two points. It wasn’t pretty at times but the guys battled hard."
