TORONTO
-- Patrick O'Sullivan and Radim Vrbata scored shootout goals, and the Coyotes overcame Toronto's furious third-period rally to beat the Maple Leafs, 3-2, on Tuesday night at the Air Canada Center.

The teams staged an entertaining overtime period in which they traded failed scoring chances. Toronto's Tyler Bozak missed on a breakaway, and Coyotes veteran Ray Whitney looked skyward after Ben Scrivens robbed him with a glove save.

Shane Doan and Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored in regulation for Phoenix (9-4-3), which has won five road games in a row. Mike Smith made 35 saves -- plus two more in the shootout -- to post his sixth win in seven games.

Mike Komisarek and Phil Kessel scored goals in the third period for the Maple Leafs (10-6-2), who have dropped four straight home games.

Scrivens had a tough time in the opening minutes. Doan gave Phoenix a 1-0 lead at 1:54 after linemate Mikkel Boedker stole the puck from Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf as he fell to the ice. Boedker got the puck to Doan, who scored with a wrist shot that went in off Scrivens.

Ekman-Larsson doubled the lead at 5:18 with a long wrist shot from the point that found its way through traffic.

The Maple Leafs sprung to life when Komisarek ended Coyotes goalie Mike Smith's shutout bid with his first goal since October 2010. The defenseman jumped in off the point and converted a pass from Matthew Lombardi at 2:08 of the third period.

That goal was soon followed by Kessel's NHL-leading 13th goal on a power play. Kessel sneaked in off the boards and slammed home a rebound to make it 2-2.

Scrivens ensured that was enough to get the game to overtime by coming up big on a penalty kill in the final five minutes. He then got his glove on Martin Hanzal's shot.

• The Coyotes have won six games in a row at Toronto. The Maple Leafs haven't beaten the Coyotes on home ice since Oct. 23, 2003.

Doan
• Captain Shane Doan's goal was his first since he scored his 300th career goal on Oct. 25 vs. Dallas.

• Phoenix allowed a power-play goal for the first time since Oct. 25 vs. Dallas.

• Center Martin Hanzal and defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson led the Coyotes with five shots on goal each. Hanzal also won 12 of 21 faceoffs.

• Forward Radim Vrbata improved to 25 for 54 in shootouts in his NHL career. Forward Patrick O'Sullivan improved to 15 for 34.

• The Coyotes played minus center Daymond Langkow for a third straight game. Langkow has been granted a leave of absence from the team because of a death in his family.

• The Coyotes scratched Paul Bissonnette and Daymond Langkow.

• The Coyotes' next game is Thursday vs. Philadelphia at Wells Fargo Center. The puck drops at 5 p.m. (Arizona time). The game can be seen on Fox Sports Arizona and can be heard on Money Radio 1510 (AM).

"The first 10 minutes we managed the puck and did good things with it. The rest of the game we decided to entertain the fans. That is what it was. It was a turnover-fest for both teams and it turned into an entertaining game... We came here, we got two points. Now it's time to move on." "The shootout is kind of a gimmicky thing, but at the end of the day those points can help you at the end of the season, so they're important and we work on it in practice. For me, I've had a lot of success in my career in the shootout." "We got a 2-0 lead and then we got a little sloppy. We thought it would be an easy game from there and Toronto came back. They tied it in the third (period), and I think we were lucky to hang on."
