GLENDALE -- The Philadelphia Flyers are the highest-scoring team in the NHL, and they showed off that trait early in their 4-2 victory over the Coyotes on Saturday night at Jobing.com Arena.
Rookie Matt Read had a goal and two assists as the Flyers took a 4-0 lead after one period. Claude Giroux scored his 15th goal of the season, and Wayne Simmonds and Scott Hartnell also scored in Philadelphia's first-period outburst.
Ray Whitney notched his 350th NHL goal, and Mikkel Boedker added a tip-in goal with 41 seconds left for the Coyotes (13-9-3), who start a three-game trip on Monday in Chicago.
Former Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, playing on consecutive nights for the first time this season, made 36 saves for Philadelphia and improved to 2-0 against his former team. The Flyers beat Phoenix in Philadelphia 2-1 on Nov. 17.
Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett pulled starting goalie Mike Smith for the first time this season after he allowed four goals on 17 shots in the first 20 minutes. Jason LaBarbera made 13 saves over the final two periods.
"It just wasn't his night," Tippett said when asked why he pulled Smith. "The puck wasn't hitting him."
Bryzgalov heard more than a few boos in the arena in which he played for 3 1/2 years before leaving after last season.
"I was surprised they booed me a little bit," he said. "I did a lot of good things for Phoenix and I appreciate what Phoenix did for me."

The Flyers scored twice in a 1:38 span before the game was seven minutes old. Read notched his 10th goal of the season unassisted on a power play thanks to a wild ricochet off the boards at 4:23 of the first period. Philadelphia made the score 2-0 when Wayne Simmonds batted a rebound past Smith at the 6:01 mark.
Giroux scored the prettiest goal of the game at 16:13 to make the score 3-0 (see KEY MOMENT below), and Hartnell completed the first-period scoring with a power-play goal with 1:31 remaining.
"We had a couple of bad bounces, but then we made some bad mistakes that ended up in our net," Tippett said, "and you give a good team like Philadelphia that much of a cushion it's going to be tough to win."
The Coyotes cut the deficit to 4-1 when Whitney, playing in his 100th game with the Coyotes, scored his ninth goal of the season from between the circles at 7:15 of the second period, but the goal failed to spark a comeback.
Phoenix outshot Philadelphia 25-13 in the final two periods and 38-30 for the game.
