GLENDALE
-- The Philadelphia Flyers are the highest-scoring team in the NHL, and they showed off that trait early in their 4-2 victory over the Coyotes on Saturday night at Jobing.com Arena.

Rookie Matt Read had a goal and two assists as the Flyers took a 4-0 lead after one period. Claude Giroux scored his 15th goal of the season, and Wayne Simmonds and Scott Hartnell also scored in Philadelphia's first-period outburst.

Ray Whitney notched his 350th NHL goal, and Mikkel Boedker added a tip-in goal with 41 seconds left for the Coyotes (13-9-3), who start a three-game trip on Monday in Chicago.

Former Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, playing on consecutive nights for the first time this season, made 36 saves for Philadelphia and improved to 2-0 against his former team. The Flyers beat Phoenix in Philadelphia 2-1 on Nov. 17.

Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett pulled starting goalie Mike Smith for the first time this season after he allowed four goals on 17 shots in the first 20 minutes. Jason LaBarbera made 13 saves over the final two periods.

"It just wasn't his night," Tippett said when asked why he pulled Smith. "The puck wasn't hitting him."

Bryzgalov heard more than a few boos in the arena in which he played for 3 1/2 years before leaving after last season.

"I was surprised they booed me a little bit," he said. "I did a lot of good things for Phoenix and I appreciate what Phoenix did for me."

The Flyers scored twice in a 1:38 span before the game was seven minutes old. Read notched his 10th goal of the season unassisted on a power play thanks to a wild ricochet off the boards at 4:23 of the first period. Philadelphia made the score 2-0 when Wayne Simmonds batted a rebound past Smith at the 6:01 mark.

Giroux scored the prettiest goal of the game at 16:13 to make the score 3-0 (see KEY MOMENT below), and Hartnell completed the first-period scoring with a power-play goal with 1:31 remaining.

"We had a couple of bad bounces, but then we made some bad mistakes that ended up in our net," Tippett said, "and you give a good team like Philadelphia that much of a cushion it's going to be tough to win."

The Coyotes cut the deficit to 4-1 when Whitney, playing in his 100th game with the Coyotes, scored his ninth goal of the season from between the circles at 7:15 of the second period, but the goal failed to spark a comeback.

Phoenix outshot Philadelphia 25-13 in the final two periods and 38-30 for the game.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Dave Vest of phoenixcoyotes.com edited this story and compiled this recap.

Leading 2-0, Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen skated the puck around the Phoenix net. While he was doing so, forward Claude Giroux sneaked his way through the Phoenix zone into the right circle and raised his stick, signaling Timonen to pass the puck to him, which he did. Giroux one-timed the pass past Coyotes goalie Mike Smith to give Philadelphia a commanding 3-0 lead at 16:13 of the first period.

Doan
• The Coyotes entered the game having allowed only 10 first-period goals in their first 24 games. On Saturday, Phoenix allowed four goals in the game's first 18:29.

• Captain Shane Doan was credited with 14 hits as the Coyotes outhit the Flyers 49-16.

• The Coyotes allowed a power-play goal to Matt Read in the first period. It was the first power-play goal Phoenix allowed on home ice since Oct. 25 vs. Dallas - a span of eight games.

• Center Kyle Turris made his 2011-12 home debut. Turris played 12:23 and took one shot on goal.

• The Coyotes went 0 for 4 on power plays and have scored just one power-play goal in their past 35 tries.

Klesla
 • Defenseman Rostislav Klesla took a team-high four shots on goal and blocked a team-high four shots.

 • The Coyotes dropped to 8-2-1 following a loss this season.

 • The Coyotes scratched Paul Bissonnette, Kyle Chipchura and Cal O'Reilly.

 • The Coyotes' next game is Monday vs. Chicago at the United Center. The puck drops at 6 p.m. (Arizona time). The game can be seen on Versus and can be heard on Money Radio 1510 (AM).

"You have to be the best team out there the first 20 minutes, and that is something we know we have to do. All of us have to get our heads more in the game and obviously help (Mike Smith) out a little bit." "They got that first (goal) on kind of a bounce. They built off that and we didn’t react the way we should have. They continued the pressure and we kind of went to sleep for a little bit. They won some battles around their net and won some battles around our net that we have to win." "I was walking in the building and I can’t explain it, what I felt, but it’s something. I played here three-and-a-half years, winning lots of games, losing lots of games and part of my soul is here."
