The Coyotes survived a furious comeback by the Chicago Blackhawks and left the United Center with two points on Monday night for the second time in less than a week.

After coughing up a 3-0 lead, the Coyotes (14-9-3) eventually got what they came for - a 4-3 shootout victory - and ended a two-game losing streak.

"Any way you look at it, to come in here twice in a week and get four points, we'll take it," Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Radim Vrbata scored against Blackhawks goalie Ray Emery in the shootout, and Coyotes goalie Mike Smith made shootout saves against Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa to secure the victory.

Toews notched two goals and an assist in the second period to help Chicago rebound from a 3-0 deficit. Toews scored his 16th and 17th goals and set up the game-tying third goal of the period by Patrick Kane to bring Chicago (16-8-4) all the way back.

Emery played well in relief of starter Corey Crawford, who was pulled just 1:09 into the second after he allowed a goal by Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle that put Phoenix ahead 3-0.

Just like in Phoenix's first visit to Chicago last week (a 4-1 victory), the Coyotes jumped to an early lead on Monday. At 2:35 iof the first period, a turnover at the Phoenix blue line led to a two-on-one rush that resulted in a goal by Raffi Torres off a nice cross-ice feed from Mikkel Boedker.

Vrbata made the score 2-0 with 1:47 left in the first by picking up a rebound near the left side of the Chicago net and tucking the puck into the net past Crawford's right pad for his team-high 13th goal.

Trailing 3-0 after Yandle's goal, Toews cut it to 3-1 with his 16th goal – which he scored at 2:40 of the second period from the lower right circle after a centering pass by Kane bounced off a skate in the slot. The puck slid over to Toews for a wrist shot that beat Smith and got the crowd back into the game.

Toews' second goal, at 9:27 of the second, made the score 3-2 after he deflected a point shot by Duncan Keith past Smith.

Toews played a major role in tying the score just 4:30 later. After Viktor Stalberg stole the puck in the defensive zone, he fired it down the ice past Toews into the Phoenix zone. Toews chased it down with Kane not far behind and then zipped a perfectly-placed pass through the crease to Kane – who'd drifted to the other side of the net – for a one-timer into the top right corner.

"That was a bit of a rollercoaster game, that one, that’s for sure," Tippett said. "...Fortunately we hung in there and got the points. Other than a couple hiccups, we were fairly solid in the third. We weren’t giving up the same chances as we were in the second."

EDITOR'S NOTE: Dave Vest of edited this story and compiled this recap.

With the score tied 3-3, the Coyotes were on a power play in the third period.

During the power play, Coyotes goalie Mike Smith skated out of his net and played the puck in his zone, but it took an unlucky bounce off teammate Ray Whitney and onto the stick of Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland, who quickly slid a pass to Marian Hossa in the slot with Smith out of position.

Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle alertly stood in front of the empty goal and blocked Hossa's shot with his right skate with 11:00 left in regulation to deny Hossa his 400th NHL goal and preserve the tie.

• The Coyotes played without defenseman Rostislav Klesla because of a lower-body injury he suffered late in the team’s 4-2 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday night. Klesla notched five assists and had a plus-7 rating in the team’s first 25 games this season. Klesla likely will miss more games this week before returning to the lineup. Chris Summers replaced Klesla in the lineup and played 9:29 in his third NHL game and his 2011-12 season debut. Summers played two games for Phoenix in 2010-11.

• Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson took the first shootout shot of his career and made it count. Radim Vrbata improved to 2 for 4 in shootouts this season.

• Defenseman Keith Yandle played 27:37. It was his second-highest ice-time total of the season; he played 31:04 in the season opener vs. San Jose on Oct. 8.

• Winger Ray Whitney notched the 599th assist of his NHL career when he assisted on Radim Vrbata's goal in the first period.

• The Coyotes improved to 9-2-1 following a loss this season.

• The Coyotes scratched Paul Bissonnette, Cal O'Reilly and Patrick O'Sullivan.

• The Coyotes' next game is Tuesday vs. Nashville at the Bridgestone Arena. The puck drops at 6 p.m. (Arizona time). The game can be seen on Fox Sports Arizona and can be heard on XTRA Sports 910 (AM).
"We stuck with it and that's what good teams have got to do. If you have a tough period you've got to come back and have another strong one, and I think we did that in the third... Coming into this building, especially, and getting a win is huge for the morale of the team." "We’ve done well this year in games after we’ve lost, and it shows what kind of team we have in this locker room... I think it takes a lot of guts to come out after a loss and play like we did tonight." "We played the way we had to and found a way to get back after a slow start...We played better late in the game but you get to that point where it’s 3-3 (and) we’re getting chances late in the third and OT, we want to find a way to get that extra point."
