Valtteri Filppula and Jiri Hudler both had a goal and assist, and the Detroit Red Wings scored five goals in the first period of their 5-2 victory over the Coyotes on Thursday night at Joe Louis Arena.

Radim Vrbata scored his team-high 14th goal of the season and Martin Hanzal notched his first goal since Oct. 27, but the Coyotes failed to extend their winning streak to three games or sweep their three-game trip vs. Central Division teams this week. Phoenix settled for a 2-1-0 record on the journey and will next play Saturday vs. Minnesota on home ice.

Coyotes goalie Mike Smith gave up four goals on 11 shots, and Head Coach Dave Tippett replaced him with backup Jason LaBarbera late in the first period. LaBarbera stopped 20 of 21 shots in relief.

Todd Bertuzzi, Tomas Holmstrom, Darren Helm also scored for Detroit, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg had two assists each, and Jimmy Howard made 30 saves.

The Red Wings scored on their first two shots of the game. Bertuzzi scored from the slot at 1:16 of the first period as his shot deflected off the skate of Phoenix defenseman Derek Morris. Filppula netted his ninth goal of the season at 2:09 when he put a shot past Smith from in front of the ne (see KEY MOMENT below).

Holmstrom converted a rebound for a power-play goal with 5:14 left in the opening period. Helm scored his fourth of the season just 43 seconds later, sending Smith to the bench in favor of LaBarbera.

Hudler added his fourth goal with 43 seconds left in the first.

Vrbata's goal put Phoenix on the board with 4:45 left in the second period. Hanzal added his fourth goal, on a power play, with 8:28 left in the game. The goal was Phoenix's first power-play goal since Nov. 23.

Datsyuk left in the second period because of an undisclosed lower-body injury and didn't return.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Dave Vest of edited this story and compiled this recap.

Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula one-timed a behind-the-net pass from Henrik Zetterberg past Coyotes goalie Mike Smith at 2:09 of the first period. The goal, scored just 53 seconds after Detroit's first goal, deflated the Coyotes.

• Winger Ray Whitney assisted on Martin Hanzal's goal in the third period to become just the 75th player in NHL history to reach 600 career regular-season assists. Click here to read more about Whitney reaching this milestone.

• Defenseman Michal Rozsival was removed from the injured reserve list before the game and then played his first game since suffering an upper-body injury in the season opener vs. San Jose on Oct. 8. Rozsival logged 14:27 of ice time in his first full game of the season, and he chipped in one shot on goal, two hits and a blocked shot.

• Center Martin Hanzal scored a goal, delivered a team-high five hits and won 7 of 11 faceoffs.

• The Coyotes scratched Paul Bissonnette and Cal O'Reilly.

• The Coyotes' next game is Saturday vs. Minnesota at Arena. The puck drops at 6 p.m. (Arizona time). The game can be seen on Fox Sports Arizona and can be heard on XTRA Sports 910 (AM).
"The puck dropped, and we made about four or five key mistakes early, and they jumped on us. We knew they were going to come hard. Our schedule's been a tough schedule and we needed to hang around that game to give us a chance, and we were out of it early." "There's nothing really to take away from that (game) other than we have to be better to start the game." "I think we got a really good start, and then were able to keep the lead and win. That's the main thing."
